Die Schriftstellerin Anna Seghers wurde 1900 unter dem Namen Netti Reiling als einziges Kind orthodoxer Juden in Mainz geboren. Sie studierte in Heidelberg Kunstwissenschaft, Geschichte und Sinologie. Dort wurde sie mit dem Marxismus vertraut. Ihr ausserordentliches schriftstellerisches Talent zeigte sich früh. Mit 28 Jahren erhielt sie für die Erzählung "Die Fischer von St. Barbara" den Kleistpreis. Mit der Veröffentlichung des Romans "Das siebte Kreuz" 1942 in den USA erlangte sie Weltruhm. Als Jüdin und Kommunistin musste sie Deutschland 1933 verlassen. Sie emigrierte nach Mexiko, von wo sie erst 1947 aus dem Exil zurückkehrte. In der DDR wurde Anna Seghers Präsidentin des Schriftstellerverbandes und engagierte sich im Kulturbund des Weltfriedensrates.
