Auch nach ihrer festlichen Weihe im November 2001 gibt die moderne spannungsvolle Architektur der Neuen Synagoge Dresden Anlass zu Diskussionen. Dass sich die Polemik am Synagogenbau entzündet, ist kein Zufall, wird doch der Zusammenhang von Architektur und Geschichte, von Vernichtung und radikalem Neubeginn hier besonders deutlich. Im Buch behandelt wird auch die berühmte Synagoge, die von Gottfried Semper entworfen wurde, sowie die Vorgeschichte seit dem Mittelalter. Im 18. Jahrhundert wurden in Dresden zahlreiche Privatsynagogen gebaut.
