Der Philosoph und kritische Zeitgenosse war das erste NS-Opfer, das wenige Monate nach der Machtübernahme im Ausland ermordet wurde. Den Hass rechter Kreise zog er bereits 1925 auf sich, als er ein Hindenburg-Porträt veröffentlichte mit dem Fazit, das hinter jenem Zero (Hindenburg) ein künftiger Nero verborgen stehe. Neben seinen philosophischen Betrachtungen der Kultur und Geschichtsschreibung setzte sich Lessing zeitlebens differenziert mit dem eigenen Judesein auseinander.
